Nursery trends and tips for 2023

Nursery trends and tips for 2023
Image styled for decorative purposes. Not suggestive of a safe sleep environment.

Your baby’s nursery is a haven for you and your little one. It’s a place you’ll spend a lot of time in – at least initially – and where you’ll create some of the earliest memories with your newborn. And styling a nursery isn’t just fun – the design and décor can also help with your child’s development. In addition to the must-have items for your nursery, here we list our top nursery trends for 2023 and key tips for making it not only look fabulous but functional and safe as well!

Natural fibres

As any fans of The Block will know, natural timber continues to trend throughout the home, including the nursery. Whether you have a natural timber-look cot or bassinet, change table or chest of drawers, timber matches with almost any colour and because of its timeless look, it will never go out of style!

The natural look also includes plants, but make sure to choose the right one. It’s also a good idea to keep them up high so that when your little bub starts to crawl around, they can’t play in the dirt!

Another way to introduce a feeling of softness is through shapes. Think arches (like rainbows) and other geometric forms to add gentle curves and movement to the space.

Splashes of colour

Speaking of colour, Pantone’s colour of the year is magenta. But if magenta or her tonal cousins aren’t quite the look you’re going for, don’t worry! Any splash of any colour is on trend as we see a move away from the neutral and earthy tones. You can start small by adding small accents and pieces until you find what’s right for you.

Vintage but not, like, old

One way you might be able to incorporate a hint of colour is by embracing your inner eclectic and opting for a touch of mid-century or vintage styles which are all the rage. Whether it’s through artwork or textures, these looks incorporate organic shapes and have a focus on functionality, which is perfect for a nursery.

Walls walls walls!

As one of the first things to catch your eye when you enter a room, walls can make a big impact. We expect the recent wallpaper trend to not only continue in 2023, but to go to a whole other level! Think wallpaper on all walls, or different but complementary wallpaper throughout the room. And with fabulous companies like Pick-a-wall, you can choose your very own design or photo to add a personalised touch.

Plus, the bonus of using wallpaper is that you can take it down and replace it as your (or your child’s!) tastes change or new trends emerge, which is way easier than dusting off that old paint roller!

Lighting – functional but cool

Another key trend we have zeroed in on for 2023 is lighting. Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle feeding, you’ll likely need to go into your baby’s nursery through the night to feed or settle them back to sleep.

The right lighting for a nursery is bright enough so you can see what you’re doing – for your safety and your baby’s – but dim enough so that it won’t fully rouse your baby. On-trend looks include layered light or luxe lighting.

Look for lights with a warm glow or a dimmer switch as well as anything you can turn on and off with your foot – your arms might be full! The position of lighting is also key – you’ll need more light on spaces like the change table than you will near their cot or bassinet.

Getting the nursery right

Trend or no trend, there are a few key things to incorporate into your nursery regardless of the look you’re going for.

  • Keep things out of reach of your baby – whether it’s a hanging mobile, a floating shelf or macrame, make sure there is nothing your baby can reach once they start standing up or moving about their cot or room. This includes curtains and blinds.
  • Fasten any drawers or shelves to the wall properly, so they can’t accidentally fall on your little one.
  • Make sure your baby will be safe in their room by following Red Nose Australia’s advice for creating safe sleep environments.
